Pay Attention, Take Notes – Hospital Malpractice
by
When a loved one is in the hospital with a serious condition it can be a very traumatic experience for them, and for those who come to visit and support the patient. While the main focus is on care, comfort, and moral support, it’s a good idea to stay aware of what’s actually happening with the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers taking care of the sick or injured person.
There is a good chance we can all recall an experience involving a hospital stay when something just didn’t go right. Something wasn’t done that seemed should have been done. Or something was done that just didn’t seem to be necessary and may have actually been harmful.
We don’t know. We’re not doctors. Most people have no idea how to recognize hospital malpractice.
This topic came to mind recently because a very good friend is watching his elderly mother go through serious medical issues. After 30 days in the hospital, the woman was transferred to a nursing facility, but 3 days after that move she was ruched back to the hospital. One of the nurses said “her incision wasn’t packed properly and there may be an infection.”
Hospital Malpractice
My friend was confused, and had no idea what to do. I asked him if he had noted the day, the time, and who he spoke with. Of course he was distraught and replied “no.”
There is a lesson to be learned here, because while the vast majority of hospital stays go very well, and the healthcare professionals involved do their jobs correctly, sometimes people make mistakes. Sometimes there is negligence involved. Other times there is evidence of medical malpractice. How do you know? You don’t. That is why there are special attorneys who are qualified to investigate cases where mistakes may have been made and will investigate the circumstances.
If you are able, keep notes during the course of a hospital visit. Write down the things you are told, ask questions, keep track of the names of people you speak with. Chances are it will all be unnecessary, but down the road if you need to speak to someone about looking into what happened, this will make it much easier for someone to determine the facts. Take notes during hospital stays.
