Dental Malpractice – a Painful Experience
by
We live in a world of Top 10 Lists, and you can find one about any subject online.
When it comes to pain there are several lists and the results vary but one type that consistently rates high is dental pain. Few things are worse than a sharp, stinging pain that feels like a lightning bolt shooting from your aching tooth to the top of your head.
Imagine going to your dentist for a procedure and leaving in more pain than you had when you went in. Despite rigorous training and certification standards for dentists, it does happen.
Dentists in the U.S. must graduate from high school and complete required courses such as general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and statistics/calculus. After acquiring a bachelor’s degree, future dentists may apply to a dental school, and students must take the Dental Admissions Test. Admission to dental school is competitive, and is generally determined based on factors such as GPA, DAT scores, research, recommendation letters, and extracurricular activities. To become a licensed dentist, one must then complete an accredited dental school curriculum and successfully master all clinical competencies and national board exams.
Most dental school curricula require four years of training, however, some states require dentists to complete a post graduate residency program as well. In the U.S., a newly graduated dentist is then awarded the DDS, Doctor of Dental Surgery, degree or the DMD, Doctor of Dental Medicine, degree depending on the dental school attended. Additionally, dentists are required to participate in continuing education where earn continuing education hours throughout their career.
A recent case in Atlanta, Georgia resulted in a settlement of $875,000 for a patient who suffers from “lifelong simultaneous numbness, tingling and excruciating pain in her lower left mouth and face” after a wisdom tooth extraction. The victim’s attorney claimed the dentist’s malpractice caused the condition.
