Medical Negligence

The Third Leading Cause of Death is Medical Negligence

by

I attended a seminar on Social Security recently where the principal topic was how to decide when to begin collecting benefits. The expert leading the program advised people who have a family history of heart disease, cancer, and/or dying at a relatively early age should start taking benefits earlier than later. On the other hand, people who have a family history of relatives and ancestors living to very old ages may want to work longer and delay applying for benefits so they get more money. This all seemed to make sense.

Heart disease and cancer have been and remain the top two leading causes of death in the U.S. and many people take the proper steps to avoid them.

Even if there is a history in your family of these illnesses, you may be able to significantly delay their onset or severity by eating healthy foods, exercising, and not smoking.

But what can we do about the shocking fact that the third leading cause of death is our own healthcare system? Statistics show that the U.S. medical process, through carelessness, negligence, and medical malpractice and medical negligence is killing people at an alarming rate. According to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, deaths due to medical errors can be broken down:

  • 4% – Medical Errors in Hospitals
  • 5% – Unnecessary Surgery
  • 9% – Other Errors in Hospitals
  • 35% – Infections in Hospitals
  • 47% – Other Negative Drug-Related Damage/Injuries

We have always advocated being informed as the best strategy to avoid bad medicine.

  1. Do some homework on your doctor and on hospitals where you may be treated. There are doctor rankings and hospital reviews online for both.
  2. Take notes when you are in the hospital or have someone take notes for you. Ask questions and write down names, treatments, and issues that concern you. Later, if there are problems you will be able to recall what happened and when.

All reasonable people understand that people in the medical field train extensively to perform in a competent and professional manner. The vast majority of doctors and nurses are conscientious and knowledgeable, but they do on occasion make mistakes.  When this happens, people suffer.
